Julia Haas

Julia Haas is a Senior Research Scientist in the Ethics Research Team at DeepMind. Previously, she served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Neuroscience Program at Rhodes College. She has held affiliations as an affiliated researcher with ANU's Humanizing Machine Intelligence Grand Challenge, a Research Fellow in the School of Philosophy at the Australian National University, and a McDonnell Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology program at Washington University in St. Louis.

Her research focuses on the philosophy of cognitive science and neuroscience, particularly the role of valuation in theories of the mind. She is currently investigating the potential for meaningfully moral artificial intelligence. Her work bridges ethics, cognitive science, and AI, aiming to address foundational questions in machine intelligence and its societal implications.

Haas has collaborated with institutions such as the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, where she taught Philosophy of Science. She has presented at events like the SSNAP (August 2024) and SPP (June 2024). Her contributions to interdisciplinary research are highlighted through workshops like the Predictive Processing Workshop at Tufts and the Decision Making Workshop at Washington University.
