Julia Grauvogel

Dr. Julia Grauvogel is a Senior Research Fellow and Research Team Spokesperson at the GIGA Institute for African Affairs, part of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). As of January 2025, she also serves as Acting Director of the GIGA Institute for African Affairs. Her academic background includes a PhD from the University of Hamburg (focused on international sanctions and Sub-Saharan Africa) and master's and bachelor's degrees in Peace Research and International Relations.

Her research focuses on international sanctions, authoritarian regimes' persistence and legitimation, and African security. Current projects include analyzing sanctions termination during crises and the impact of external shocks like pandemics. She has also investigated sanctions' effects on companies and the political economy of sanctions enforcement.

Key publications include works on sanctions' selective enforcement, lessons from the Iraq sanctions termination, and African geopolitical trends. Her media contributions address sanctions' effectiveness and global security dynamics. She has organized conferences such as the 2024 MIASA Policy Conference on conflict resolution in Africa.

Teaching and training include workshops on academic publishing, qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), and sanctions in international relations at the University of Hamburg and the GIGA Doctoral Programme.
