Prof. Julia Fritz-Steuber is a Professor of Cellular Microbiology and Vice President of Research at the University of Hohenheim since 2018. She leads a research group focusing on microbial energy conservation mechanisms and bacterial pathogenesis. Her work bridges biochemistry, structural biology, and microbiology with applications in infectious disease research.
Education & Career:
- Vice President of Research, University of Hohenheim (2018–present)
- Professor of Cellular Microbiology, University of Hohenheim (2009–present)
- Assistant Professor, University of Zurich (2004–2009)
- Group Leader, ETH Zurich (1998–2004)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, ETH Zurich (1996–1998)
Research Focus: Her group investigates energy transduction processes in bacteria, particularly sodium ion cycling in pathogens like Vibrio cholerae. Recent work includes structural studies of Na⁺-pumping enzymes and interactions between immune cells and bacteria under stress conditions. Projects like LAPIN (Leads against Gram-negative Pathogens) highlight translational research into antimicrobial strategies.
Advising & Teams: Supervises a dynamic team of M.Sc. researchers including Luise Weber, Sebastian Herdan, and Jann-Louis Hau. Collaborates with institutions via DFG-funded projects on bacterial energy systems and host-pathogen interactions.
