Julia Bursten

Dr. Julia Bursten is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Kentucky. She specializes in the philosophy and history of science, focusing on interdisciplinary scientific practices such as nanoscience and agricultural science. Her research examines how conceptual tools and models shape scientific knowledge production, with particular emphasis on classification, modeling, and inter-theory relations. She coordinates the Mid-South Philosophy of Science Network, fostering collaboration among regional scholars.

Education: PhD (2015) and MA (2011) in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Pittsburgh; BA (2008) in Philosophy from Rice University.

Research Interests: Philosophy of nanoscience, philosophy of agricultural science, history of healthcare ethics, and synthetic sciences. Her work bridges philosophy with practical scientific challenges, emphasizing applied epistemology and the role of scale in scientific explanation.
