Dr. Julia Becker is a Scientific Associate at the Chair of Medieval History and Historical Grundwissenschaften (Prof. Dr. Martina Giese) at the University of Würzburg. Her research focuses on medieval monasticism, Norman rule in Southern Italy, and knowledge transfer from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. She specializes in historical grundwissenschaften, diplomatics, and the cultural and political history of the 11th–13th centuries.
- Current Role: Since June 2023, she works on the academy project "The Formation of Europe by Overcoming Division in the 12th Century".
- Prior Roles: 2017–2023 at Heidelberg Academy (deputy head), 2016–2017 at University of Cologne, 2011–2016 at Heidelberg University (DFG-funded).
Research Interests: Becker explores medieval monastic communities as "innovation laboratories", analyzing their political structures, cultural practices, and role in transcultural exchange. Her work includes studies on the Normans in Sicily, charters, and material culture.
Publications & Projects: She has published extensively on Norman rulers, monastic consent dynamics, and visual/spiritual aspects of religious communities. Her book on Count Roger I of Sicily won the Stauferstiftung Förderpreis (2010). She contributes to documentaries like Terra X and co-edits volumes on medieval spirituality.
