Jules Lobel is the Bessie McKee Walthour Endowed Chair and Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He specializes in international law, constitutional law, civil rights, and comparative law. Lobel has authored influential books such as Less Safe, Less Free (2007) and Success without Victory (2003), which explore civil liberties, national security, and legal strategies for social change. His scholarship appears in top-tier journals like the Yale Law Journal and Harvard International Law Journal.
Education: JD from Rutgers University; BA from New York University. Awards include the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award (1993) and the Allegheny County Bar Foundation’s Career Achievement Award (2006). Lobel has litigated landmark cases involving constitutional rights, including Rasul v. Bush (habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees) and Arar v. Ashcroft (extraordinary rendition). He frequently engages in pro bono work and advises governments on constitutional reform, including Nicaragua and Burundi.
As President of the Center for Constitutional Rights, Lobel advocates for human rights through litigation and public advocacy. His recent work addresses covert warfare, war powers, and the intersection of law and protest movements. He actively involves students in high-stakes legal battles, providing them hands-on experience in constitutional litigation.
