Jules H. van Binsbergen is the Nippon Life Professor in Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Anthony L. Davis Director of the Joseph H. Lauder Institute for Management and International Studies. He is also a Visiting Professor at MIT Sloan School of Management. His research focuses on asset pricing, financial markets and the macroeconomy, and the performance of financial intermediaries. He holds a PhD from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and has held faculty positions at Stanford University and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
His research explores topics such as mutual fund manager skill, stock return predictability, and the real economic impacts of financial market anomalies. His work has been published in top-tier journals like the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, and Journal of Financial Economics. He is a Research Associate at NBER and a Research Fellow at CEPR.
Professor van Binsbergen is recognized for his teaching excellence, having received multiple awards including the Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Award and Core Curriculum Teaching Awards. He teaches courses in investment management, corporate finance, and valuation at Wharton. His recent work includes applying machine learning to economic forecasting and examining regulatory implications of charlatans in high-skilled professions.
He leads collaborative research initiatives through his affiliations with NBER and CEPR, contributing to policy-relevant studies on financial markets and economic dynamics. His interdisciplinary approach bridges macroeconomics and finance, addressing both theoretical and empirical challenges in these fields.
