Dr. Jule Adriaans is a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University, specializing in social structure and social inequality research within Prof. Sauer's group. She completed her doctoral studies at the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS) and earned her Dr. phil degree in May 2023 with a thesis titled "Distributive Justice: Definition, Determinants, and the Consequences of the Justice of Earnings." Prior to her current position, she worked as a Research Associate at the Socio-economic Panel Study (SOEP) at DIW Berlin from 2018 to 2022.
Her educational background includes:
- Dr. phil, Bielefeld University (2023)
- MA Sociology, Bielefeld University (2014-2016)
- BA Sociology (major), Psychology (minor), Bielefeld University (2011-2014)
Dr. Adriaans' research focuses on how individuals perceive the fairness of their earnings and income distribution across societies. She investigates the determinants of justice evaluations, gender pay gaps, cross-national comparisons of earnings justice, and consequences of perceived unfairness on life satisfaction. Her work employs large-scale survey data and comparative methodologies to understand social inequality across European countries, with particular attention to how social comparisons, reciprocity norms, and reference groups shape earnings fairness evaluations. A recurring theme in her research is examining how gender differences in justice perceptions evolve across the life course.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals strong methodological rigor in measuring justice perceptions, with significant contributions to survey design and cross-cultural comparability. Her research demonstrates that the gender gap in fair earnings perceptions increases with age due to higher age premiums for men, revealing important life course dynamics in earnings justice evaluations. She has also developed measurement instruments like the Justice Evaluation of the Income Distribution (JEID) scale.
Dr. Adriaans has received recognition for her work on social inequality and distributive justice, particularly through her contributions to the Socio-economic Panel Study (SOEP) and the "Expectations towards Economy and Society" survey. Her research on data anonymization procedures for scientific use files and the social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates her interdisciplinary approach that bridges sociology, economics, and political science.
She is affiliated with Research Area 5 - Social Structure and Social Inequality at Bielefeld University, contributing to the university's strategic focus on understanding complex social dynamics and transcending disciplinary boundaries in research on social justice issues.
