Jukka Sarjala is an Associate Professor (Title of Docent) at the University of Turku's Department of Cultural History, within the School of History, Culture and Arts Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Turku (1994) and has been affiliated with the institution since the 1980s in various roles including researcher, lecturer, and administrative positions. His academic career includes visiting scholar appointments at Uppsala University (1989) and the Herzog August Bibliothek (1997). He has held multiple research grants from institutions like the Academy of Finland and the Kone Foundation, and served as a Collegium researcher at the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (2015–2016).

His research focuses on 19th-century cultural history, Early Romanticism, and intellectual networks, with particular emphasis on Finnish and Swedish contexts. Notable works include monographs on Biedermeier literary life, E.T.A. Hoffmann's influence, and Turku's Romantic intellectual networks. He has also contributed to new materialism studies and edited volumes on Finnish literary history and academic traditions.
Recent research activities include projects funded by the Academy of Finland (2013–2014, 2017–2019) and the Finnish Cultural Foundation (2018–2020). His work bridges academic and public history through edited collections and collaborative projects like Kirjojen kaipuu (2024), examining early 19th-century book culture in Finland.
