Juha Salmitaival is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki's Department of Behavioral Sciences working on the Overloaded brain project, and a part-time Postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University's School of Science in the aioAALTO project. He serves as a doctoral program supervisor in Brain & Mind, Human Behavior, and Clinical Research programs under the Faculty of Medicine. His academic background includes a Doctor of Psychology from the University of Helsinki (2009) with a dissertation on "Human brain networks of auditory attention and working memory" with a Laudatur grade.
- Doctor of Psychology, University of Helsinki (2009)
- Licensed Psychologist, University of Helsinki (2009)
- Master of Philosophy, Cognitive Science, University of Helsinki (2004)
Dr. Salmitaival's research focuses on cognitive neuroscience, particularly auditory attention and working memory networks in the human brain. His work combines experimental psychology with advanced brain imaging techniques including MRI, MEG, and EEG. He has made significant contributions to understanding attention mechanisms in both healthy individuals and those with neuropsychiatric conditions such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. His clinical expertise encompasses neuropsychological assessments for individuals with attention and executive function difficulties.
His recent publications demonstrate a growing interest in social cognition and physiological responses, particularly in his 2025 paper on narcissistic traits and physiological arousal during self-disclosure. His research spans both basic cognitive neuroscience and clinical applications, with studies on Parkinson's disease, ADHD assessment using virtual reality, and multisensory attention processes.
- Faculty (Behavioral Sciences) Dissertation Award, University of Helsinki (2010)

- Human Brain Mapping Poster Award, Chicago (2007)
- Nordic Fun-NET Poster Award, Bergen (2005)
- Nordic Fun-NET Poster Award, Rymättylä (2004)
Dr. Salmitaival has supervised multiple bachelor's theses and has been involved in numerous research projects including Overloaded brain, Functional networks of attention, and the Cognitive Neuroscience Cluster. He has received substantial research funding including from the Finnish Cultural Foundation and University of Helsinki Science Foundation. As an active member of the academic community, he serves on research committees and is a peer reviewer for major neuroscience journals including NeuroImage and Human Brain Mapping.
