Judy Bolger is a Writing Development Tutor at Carlow College, where she supports academic writing through her research expertise in Irish social history. She holds a first-class B.A. in English and History from Carlow College, a first-class M.Phil. in Modern Irish History from Trinity College Dublin (2017), and a Ph.D. in Modern Irish History from Trinity College Dublin (2025), funded by the Trinity College 1252 Postgraduate Research Scholarship. Her doctoral research examines impoverished mothers and women’s experiences of maternity in Irish workhouses during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, expanding the historiography of Irish women’s lives.
Her research interests center on 19th-century Irish social and cultural history, particularly women’s experiences of motherhood, institutionalization, and poverty. She explores how themes like maternal neglect and institutional care were addressed in workhouses and later institutions like Magdalene laundries. She has contributed to peer-reviewed journals such as History Studies and Carloviana, and her work has been recognized at academic conferences, including the Irish History Students’ Association.
Judy is affiliated with the Women’s History Association of Ireland (as Book Review Editor) and the Irish Association of Professional Historians. She also participates in international research networks focused on healthcare history and infant care institutions. Her blog posts and publications highlight understudied narratives of marginalized mothers, emphasizing the intersection of poverty, gender, and institutional structures in Ireland’s past.
