Judy Blackbeard is an Adjunct Professor affiliated with the School of Science at RMIT University. Her research focuses on environmental toxicology, particularly the behavior of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic ecosystems. She can be contacted at judy.blackbeard@rmit.edu.au.
Research Interests: Dr. Blackbeard investigates the dietary uptake and depuration kinetics of chemical contaminants like PFAS in aquatic organisms. Her work provides critical insights into the bioaccumulation potential of pollutants such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in benthic fish species.
Key Publication: In 2020, she co-authored a study demonstrating that GenX (a PFAS alternative) does not bioaccumulate in blue spot gobies, unlike PFOA and PFOS, which exhibit significant retention. This research highlights differential elimination rates of PFAS isomers and informs environmental risk assessments.
