Judith Paltin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gender, Race, Sexuality & Social Justice at the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on modernist literature, gender studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to 20th-century cultural practices. She has held tenured positions since 2021 and actively participates in academic organizations like the MLA and the International James Joyce Foundation.
Her work explores themes such as modernist crowd dynamics, exile, and intermediality in works by Joyce, Conrad, and others. She chairs panels at major conferences and has published widely on topics like Ulysses’ musical intertextuality and eco-Joycean studies. Paltin’s book *Modernism and the Idea of the Crowd* (2020) examines collective movements in modernist narratives. She engages with global modernist studies, emphasizing marginalized voices and transnational perspectives.
Her research extends to gender and sexuality through her affiliation with UBC’s Critical Studies in Sexuality program. She has delivered keynote addresses, including a 2022 symposium on Ulysses’ centenary. Paltin’s scholarship bridges literary analysis with social and environmental critiques, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary and inclusive scholarship.
