Judith L. Provencal is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Delaware, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. She also serves as Director of the DE Asteroseismic Center and is a Resident Astronomer at the Mt. Cuba Astronomical Observatory. Dr. Provencal earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas and a B.A. from Smith College, joining UD in 1994 as a postdoc under Dr. Harry Shipman.
Her research focuses on asteroseismology of pulsating white dwarfs, using stellar pulsations to map interiors and study extreme astrophysical conditions. Key areas include convection processes, rotational dynamics, and the connection between mass loss and magnetic fields. She has pioneered long-term observational campaigns spanning decades, such as the G29-38 pulsation study, and contributed to blazar flare mechanics via optical monitoring.
Provencal’s work bridges stellar evolution with galactic history, exploring white dwarfs as probes of planetary system evolution and chemical enrichment. Her observational expertise spans ground-based telescopes (e.g., Mt. Cuba Observatory) and space missions like Kepler/TESS. Collaborations include Whole Earth Telescope campaigns for multi-site pulsation monitoring.
Her research emphasizes empirical constraints on theoretical models, particularly in convection parameterization and crystallization processes in white dwarf cores. She actively participates in open cluster studies and has contributed to disentangling asteroid debris signatures around white dwarfs.
