Judith Halasz

Judith Halasz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at SUNY New Paltz, specializing in culture, film studies, urban sociology, and social theory. Her career spans 2006 to present, with promotions from Lecturer to Associate Professor and interim chairmanship (2019-2020). She holds a PhD in Sociology with a Film Studies Certificate from CUNY (2007) and a BA in Mathematics from Brown University (1995).

• Research focuses on gentrification/supergentrification in NYC (particularly Brooklyn), affordable housing inequality, Lower East Side bohemian history, and gender politics in avant-garde cinema.
• Publications appear in journals like Journal of Urban Affairs, Urban Geography, and Teaching Sociology, culminating in her 2015 book The Bohemian Ethos.
• Awards include the RSCA Undergraduate Research Mentor Award (2019) and University Film & Video Association's History/Theory/Criticism Paper Award (2005).
