Judith Chun-Hsu Yang is the William Kepler Whiteford Professor at the Swanson School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, with a distinguished career in materials science and surface physics. Her research focuses on the atomic-scale understanding of oxidation processes, catalysis, and nanomaterials using advanced electron microscopy techniques.
Education:
- PhD in Physics from Cornell University (1993)
- MS in Physics from Cornell University (1989)
- BA in Physics from University of California (1986)
Professor Yang's research interests center on the fundamental understanding of oxidation kinetics at metal surfaces, particularly copper and its alloys, using in situ ultra-high vacuum transmission electron microscopy (UHV-TEM). Her work bridges the gap between surface science and practical applications in catalysis, corrosion, and nanotechnology. She has made significant contributions to understanding oxide nucleation, growth mechanisms, and the structure-property relationships of nanoscale materials. Her research group employs a combination of experimental techniques including electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and theoretical modeling to investigate materials at the atomic scale.
Professor Yang's recent publications (2018-2021) demonstrate a continued focus on metal oxidation processes, catalytic mechanisms, and nanoscale characterization. Her work spans multiple disciplines including materials science, surface chemistry, and catalysis, with particular emphasis on copper oxidation, bimetallic catalysts, and in situ observation techniques. The publications reveal a consistent research trajectory examining the atomic-scale dynamics of materials under reactive environments.
Scientific Awards:
- Nickolas A. DeCecco Professorship (2011)
- Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award - Junior Faculty (2005)
- B.P. America Faculty Fellow (2004)
- NASA Faculty Fellowship (2003)
- NSF Career Award (2002)
- International Postdoctoral Fellows Program (1993)
Professor Yang has led a well-funded research program supported by NSF, NASA, and Department of Energy, enabling her to establish state-of-the-art facilities for in situ materials characterization. She has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry. Her collaborative research spans multiple institutions and disciplines, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern materials science.
Professor Yang leads a dynamic research group at the University of Pittsburgh that operates advanced electron microscopy facilities, focusing on real-time observation of materials transformations at the nanoscale. Her work has significant implications for energy conversion technologies, corrosion prevention, and the development of advanced catalytic materials for environmental applications.
