Judith K. Bass, PhD, MPH, MIA is a Professor in the Department of Mental Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHBSPH). She holds primary affiliations with the Center for Global Health and the Center for Humanitarian Health. Her research focuses on implementation science for mental health interventions in low-resource settings, particularly in conflict-affected and LMIC contexts. Dr. Bass leads an NIMH T32-funded training program in global mental health, emphasizing interdisciplinary research and mentoring.
Education: PhD from JHBSPH (2004), MPH and MIA from Columbia University (1998).
Research interests include trauma-affected populations, task-sharing interventions, psychosocial support, and scaling mental health programs in humanitarian crises. Her work spans Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, South Africa, Colombia, Ukraine, and others.
Key projects include implementation strategies in Ukraine/DRC, mental health measurement development, and integrating global learnings into Baltimore's programs. Awards include multiple teaching awards from JHBSPH (2021, 2016, 2012), the Global Health Faculty Advising Award (2014), and early-career recognition for doctoral research (2004).
Advising includes training over 100 global mental health researchers through her T32 program. Grants include NIH funding for implementation science and humanitarian health initiatives.
Labs/teams: Active collaborations with in-country service providers in multiple countries, leading interdisciplinary global mental health teams.
