Juan Pablo Atal is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (2016). His research focuses on Public Economics, Industrial Organization, and Health Economics, with emphasis on healthcare policy and market dynamics. He currently serves as Associate Undergraduate Chair in the Department of Economics.
His work examines topics such as public option design in pharmaceutical markets, long-term health insurance mechanisms, and the effects of trade associations on market competition. Notable studies include analyses of collusion in physician networks, quality regulation in pharmaceutical markets, and the impact of social/economic activity on emergency room utilization during the pandemic.
Publications span journals like the Journal of Political Economy, American Economic Review, and Rand Journal of Economics. His research bridges theoretical models with empirical evidence, addressing policy-relevant questions in healthcare markets and regulatory frameworks.
