Juan Llamas-Rodriguez is an Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication and Associate Director of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication. His research examines how media representations shape perceptions of borders, migration, and social dynamics, with a focus on Latin American and Latinx diasporic communities. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2017), M.A. from Concordia University (2013), and B.A. from the University of Toronto (2011).
Llamas-Rodriguez's research explores the intersection of digital technologies, border infrastructures, and cultural production. His work critically analyzes how media forms like television, video games, and film construct political imaginaries of borderlands and migrant experiences. Key themes include racial infrastructures of borders, sustainability of border ecologies, and the politics of representation in global media flows.
His scholarly publications demonstrate consistent focus on media representations of borders, migration, and Latin American media cultures. Recent works examine digital border resistance, racial politics in gaming interfaces, and sustainable infrastructural futures. The corpus reveals deep engagement with media as both analytical object and political intervention.
Llamas-Rodriguez leads several collaborative initiatives: he co-edits [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film & Moving Image Studies, co-directs The Migrant Steps Project (a public humanities initiative), and participates in the Global Internet TV Consortium. His multimodal scholarship includes video essays exploring migration, queer representation, and border infrastructures through innovative formal experimentation.
