Alicia Schmidt Camacho is a Professor of Ethnicity, Race, and Migration at Yale University and serves as Head of Ezra Stiles College. She holds affiliations with the Yale Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration, the Council of Latin American and Iberian Studies, and the American Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Programs. Her research focuses on migration, border governance, social movements, and cultural politics in North America, with an emphasis on Latinx communities and transnational dynamics.
Her scholarship includes the acclaimed book Migrant Imaginaries: Latino Cultural Politics in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands (2008), which won the Lora Romero First Book Prize, and ongoing projects such as The Carceral Border and Migrant Justice, examining state violence against migrants and historical contestations of sovereignty. She teaches courses on race, colonialism, migration, and transnational Latinx communities.
Prof. Camacho co-founded the Migrant Justice Initiative, a multidisciplinary project partnering with organizations like the Global Labor Justice Project and National Day Laborer Organizing Network. She actively contributes to local New Haven initiatives like Junta for Progressive Action and the Connecticut Bail Fund, advocating for labor, civil, and immigrant rights. Her work bridges academic research with grassroots activism to address migrant vulnerabilities and promote justice in the Americas.
