Prof. Ju Li is the Battelle Energy Alliance Professor in Nuclear Engineering and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. His research focuses on materials for energy storage, advanced manufacturing, and quantum computing. He leads the Ju Li Group, which explores mechanical behaviors of materials and novel energy systems. Li earned his BS in Physics from USTC (1994) and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from MIT (2000), with prior appointments at Ohio State University and the University of Pennsylvania before joining MIT in 2011.
His research interests span materials science, computing/data science, and energy/environmental applications. Notable achievements include developing fiber-shaped rechargeable batteries and neuromorphic computing hardware. Li chairs the MIT A+B Applied Energy Symposia addressing climate change solutions.
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Physics, University of Science and Technology of China, 1994
- Doctor of Philosophy in Nuclear Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2000
His work bridges computational methods and experimental materials science, with publications in top journals like Nature and Science. Awards include Fellowships from AAAS (2019), MRS (2017), and TMS (2022), plus the Presidential Early Career Award (2005).
Prof. Li’s lab emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, with projects on memristive materials, quantum information systems, and additive manufacturing of high-temperature alloys. His team has pioneered self-healing solid electrolytes and programmable resistors for analog AI processors.
