معرفی
Joël Zaffran is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Bordeaux, affiliated with the Émile Durkheim Center, and serves as director of the Céreq Bordeaux center. He is also an associate researcher at IRSEM, focusing on societal aspects of the military. His work spans sociological research on education, youth, and social inclusion.
Research Interests: His research centers on the sociology of education, with a focus on school dropout, reintegration of youth without diplomas, inclusion of students with disabilities, and the paradoxical academic struggles of intellectually gifted students. He also investigates adolescence as a social experience and the role of educational institutions in shaping identity. A more recent line of inquiry examines military engagement among disadvantaged youth and the professionalization of the armed forces.
Publications and Expertise: His recent publications analyze university dropout trends, temporal structures in schooling, and disciplinary mechanisms in military-style educational settings. These works reflect a broader interest in how institutions regulate youth transitions. He has authored both academic and general audience books, such as Zadig after school and The Time of Adolescence.
Public Engagement and Policy: Since 2019, Zaffran has served as an academic expert on the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region's public policy evaluation commission. He frequently contributes to media discussions on youth, education, and adolescence, with appearances in outlets like Le Figaro, L'Obs, and Revue de l’OFCE.
