Joël Durant is a Researcher at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He leads the Marine Ecology Group and edits the Marine Science Blog. His research focuses on environmental variability’s influence on trophic interactions, particularly in Arctic marine systems, involving predators like seabirds and fish stocks such as cod and capelin. Durant holds a Doctorate in ecophysiology from France (specializing in avian energetics) and an Habilitation in science from the University of Strasbourg (2014). His work integrates ecological, climatic, and fisheries data to understand predator-prey dynamics, climate impacts, and ecosystem resilience. Recent studies emphasize the Barents Sea, exploring how climate change alters food webs and fish populations. He collaborates internationally, contributing to projects like the Nansen Legacy. His findings highlight nonlinear species interactions, mass mortality effects, and the role of predator biomass in ecosystem shifts.
Education:
- Doctorate in Ecophysiology, France (dissertation on energetic constraints in organisms)
- Habilitation in Science, University of Strasbourg (2014)
Research interests span climate change ecology, marine food web dynamics, and the application of ecological theory to fisheries management. His work bridges field observations with modeling to address pressing environmental challenges in Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems.
