João Meneses

João Meneses is a Research Fellow at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), where he contributes to the Nanosafety Research Group under Alfaro-Moreno. His work centers on computational tools for designing safe and sustainable advanced nanomaterials.

He earned his MSc in Bioengineering with a Biomedical Engineering specialization from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). His academic training encompassed Biomedical Instrumentation, Signal and Image Processing, Tissue Engineering, and Regenerative Medicine. His Master’s Thesis, developed jointly with University Medical Center Utrecht, investigated 3D printing of polycaprolactone/graphene-based scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.

João’s research spans Nanosafety, Nanomaterials, Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, 3D Printing, and Graphene-based materials, with emphasis on computational modeling for nanomaterial risk assessment and biomedical applications. His entrepreneurial spirit drives his approach to scientific challenges.

His 2020-2022 publications in Nanomaterials and Polymers reveal a cohesive focus on nanosafety frameworks, polymer/graphene biocomposites for regenerative medicine, and nanographene oxide applications in non-melanoma skin cancer therapy. These works consistently integrate graphene-based nanomaterials with biological systems for therapeutic and environmental safety outcomes.

As an active member of INL’s Nanosafety Research Group, João participates in advancing the laboratory’s mission to develop responsibly engineered nanomaterials for societal and environmental benefit.
