Mgr. et Mgr. Jozef Kovalčik, PhD. serves as Vice-Rector for Artistic Activities, ICT Development, and Public & Media Relations at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. He holds a PhD from the University of Trnava (2010) and degrees in Philosophy (2002) and Aesthetics (2006) from Comenius University and Charles University. His career includes roles at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava (2004-2015), where he led the Visual and Cultural Studies Section, and as Director of the Slovak Arts Council (2015-2023). He is currently a faculty member at Comenius University's Department of Aesthetics.
Dr. Kovalčik's research focuses on the intersection of high art and popular culture, design theory, and cultural policy. His major works include Aesthetics of Popular Culture (2014), High Art and Popular Culture, and the 2023 Routledge publication A Philosophy of Cultural Scenes in Art and Popular Culture. He co-founded the journal Popular Inquiry (2017) and has advised on national cultural policies.
He has held leadership roles in academic governance, including Vice-Rector for Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts (2011-2015), and contributed to civic initiatives like founding the Slovak Association for Aesthetics. His work bridges academic research with practical cultural policy development.
