Joyce Sheau Roei Yee is a Professor of Design and Social Innovation at Northumbria School of Design, Northumbria University. She is a prominent design researcher, author, and practitioner with extensive experience in design and social innovation, service design, and interaction design. Her work focuses on the role, value, and impact of design in organizational contexts, particularly how design drives change through innovative practices.
Her educational background includes:
- BFA in Graphic Design
- MA in Visual Communication
- PhD in Design (awarded September 1, 2003)
Professor Yee's research centers on designing for social good, with a critical focus on culturally diverse and locally relevant practices that challenge Western-centric design models. She advocates for the decentring of dominant design narratives through recognition of different practices, knowledges, and wisdoms. Her work spans organizational transformation, social innovation in the Asia-Pacific region, and women's empowerment through mentorship programs.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on entangled social innovation practices across the Asia-Pacific region, with particular attention to cultural specificity, relational identity, and emotional labor in participatory design. The research shows a clear trajectory toward understanding how design can address intersectional barriers, particularly for women in creative sectors, while developing frameworks for respectful, contextually appropriate social innovation.
As an academic supervisor, Professor Yee mentors doctoral students in service design and social innovation, with current research examining grassroots social designing with communities. She has secured research funding, including a British Council grant for research on creative and cultural districts in the UK and Thailand. Her professional activities include serving as an external examiner for multiple universities and holding adjunct professor positions at Taylor's University (Malaysia) and RMIT (Australia).
Professor Yee co-founded the Designing Entangled Social Innovation in Asia-Pacific (DESIAP) network, which serves as a research platform, community of practice, and collaboration network for social innovation practitioners across the region. DESIAP facilitates knowledge sharing and capacity building while challenging dominant Western design paradigms through culturally diverse practices.
