Joyce Madancy is Professor of History at Union College, specializing in state-society relations in 19th-20th century China. Her award-winning book The Troublesome Legacy of Commissioner Lin analyzes opium suppression in Fujian Province. She researches depictions of China's 'drug czar' Lin Zexu and memorialization of comfort women.
Madancy teaches diverse courses on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean history, including 'Drugs and Cultures in Asia' and 'World War II in East Asia.' She has led study abroad programs in Ireland and England exploring drugs in the British Empire and alcohol in Irish culture.
