Joy Shao is an Assistant Professor in the Nursing Midwifery and Health Department at Northumbria University. She holds a Doctor of Education (EdD) from Durham University (2023), a Certificate in Executive Leadership from the University of Oxford (2021), and multiple postgraduate qualifications in nursing and education from Northumbria University. Her research focuses on intercultural communication in nursing, leadership development, global health, and healthcare simulation. She actively contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and gender equality.
Her academic journey includes a BSc in Nursing (2008), PGDipEd in Practice Development (2005), and MSc in Research Methods (2002). Awarded the Florence Nightingale Research Scholarship (2016) and Mary Seacole Development Award (2014), her work emphasizes reducing healthcare disparities through innovative educational strategies and cross-border nursing standards.
Shao supervises PhD students exploring intercultural communication, nursing leadership, and simulation-based education. Her recent publications analyze leadership standards in nursing curricula across 11 countries and assess clinical innovation among nurses using advanced statistical methods.
