Dr. Joy Leng is a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey's School of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a PhD from the University of Reading (2015), an MSc from the University of Liverpool (2011), and a BSc from the University of Manchester (2010). Her research focuses on animal gut microbiomes, their interactions with disease, diet, and drugs, and the development of in vitro models to study gut microbial communities without animal testing. She employs techniques like 16S rRNA sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, and NMR spectroscopy to analyze microbiome effects on host metabolism and pathogen dynamics.
Her work includes studies on equine grass sickness, equine forage effects, avian influenza impacts on chicken microbiomes, and drug effects on gut microbiota. She has contributed to advancing lab models of the equine and chicken gut, enabling non-animal research. Her research emphasizes antimicrobial resistance transmission and microbiome-driven metabolic pathways.
Dr. Leng’s publications span 2015–2022, reflecting her expertise in veterinary microbiology and systems biology. She collaborates widely, with co-authors from institutions like the University of Reading and Liverpool. Her research bridges classical microbiology with cutting-edge genomic and metabolomic technologies.
