Joy Gordon is a Professor and the Ignacio Ellacuría, S.J. Chair of Social Ethics at the Philosophy Department of Loyola University Chicago, with a joint appointment at Loyola’s School of Law. She joined the department in January 2015.
- Education: PhD in Philosophy from Yale University; JD from Boston University School of Law.
Her research focuses on social and political philosophy, human rights, international law, and ethical issues in international relations, particularly examining economic sanctions and global governance. Her publications address the legal and moral dimensions of sanctions, including the book Invisible War: The United States and the Iraq Sanctions (2010).
Recent articles analyze the humanitarian impacts of sanctions on Cuba and Iran, the ethical implications of targeted sanctions, and overbreadth in international law enforcement. These works span disciplines such as international law, political philosophy, and human rights.
- Scientific Awards: National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship, and editorial board member of Ethics and International Affairs.
She currently collaborates with Latin American scholars to advance research in international ethics, supported by grants from NEH and ACLS.
