Rockwell's scholarship investigates musical sound's expressive potential, specializing in 20th-century American popular music, voice-leading mathematics, and rhythmic structures. His performance work spans bluegrass/roots music, contemporary concert compositions, and Balinese gamelan collaborations, including transatlantic experiments with Zimbabwean mbira traditions.
Recent publications reveal patterns in bluegrass genre formation, rhythmic isochrony disruptions, and voice-leading transformations. These works intersect with broader themes of cultural identity, technical innovation, and analytical methodology.
