José Anderson serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, teaching Diversity & The Law (AFRC2180/LGST2180) and Law and Social Values (LGST1010). He concurrently holds a professorship at the University of Baltimore School of Law. With nine years at the Maryland Public Defender’s Office—including roles as assistant public defender, supervising attorney, and special assistant public defender (1991-1993)—he has litigated major felony and death penalty cases across all U.S. justice system levels, including the Supreme Court.
His research centers on Criminal Law and Constitutional Law, with emphasis on Racial Discrimination frameworks. Author of a Criminal Law textbook and numerous articles, his scholarship examines law's role in addressing systemic inequities through historical and contemporary lenses. Teaching integrates case analyses, editorial reviews, and interactive media to explore racial profiling, affirmative action, and social-legal dynamics in U.S. jurisprudence.
