Professor Jostein Bakke is a leading figure in Quaternary Geology and Paleoclimatology at the University of Bergen, where he has been faculty since 2011. He serves as Director of the national infrastructure Earth surface sediment laboratory (EARTHLAB) since 2016 and leads the Centre for Integrated Earth System Science Education (iEarth) since 2020 - a National Centre of Excellence for modernizing Earth Science teaching.
- PhD in Quaternary Geology (2004, University of Bergen)
- Master in Physical Geography (1999, University of Bergen & UNIS)
His research focuses on reconstructing past climates through glacier dynamics and sediment analysis, with fieldwork spanning both hemispheres and the Himalayas. He pioneered methods for estimating glacier size from lake sediments and studying climate-society interactions in the Arctic. His work bridges traditional geoscience with societal applications and climate education reform.
Key scientific recognition includes the Fulbright Arctic Chair Award (2011-2012). He has published 83 peer-reviewed papers with an h-index of 34, appearing in top journals like Nature Geoscience and Quaternary Science Reviews, and has contributed to 12 book chapters and 33 popular science articles.
