Josie Fullerton

Dr. Josie Fullerton is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health within the College of Medical, Life & Veterinary Sciences. Her current research, funded by the British Heart Foundation, focuses on extracellular vesicles in hypertensive heart disease under Professor Nicklin’s supervision. She holds roles in institutional committees, including the Athena Swan Self-assessment Team, Research Planning and Strategy Committee (RPSC), and led the Network for Early career Researcher Development (NERD) from 2020–2024. Josie is a co-chair of the Young Academy of Scotland’s Facilitating Group, fostering multisector collaboration to address Scotland’s ‘Grand Challenges.’

Education: BSc Neuroscience and MRes Biomedical Science at the University of Glasgow; PhD in neural mechanisms of nicotine addiction at the University of Strathclyde. Her research spans cerebrovascular neuropathologies, stroke, hypertension, and traumatic brain injury, with expertise in extracellular vesicle isolation, in vivo disease models, and behavioral analysis.

Teaching: Since 2019, she has lectured on Neuroscience and Clinical MedSci courses and provides training in laboratory techniques to students and colleagues across multiple schools. She actively engages with charities (e.g., British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer’s Research UK) and public outreach, including events like the Edinburgh Science Festival and school programs.

Grants include the ‘Neurophysiology of preclinical menopause’ (Alzheimer’s Research UK), ‘The THISTLE study’ (NHS Endowment Funds), and ‘Blood-brain barrier disruption in pediatric TBI’ (Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity).
