Josiah Heyman is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies at UTEP. His research addresses human rights, migration, and water sustainability in transborder regions, with emphasis on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. He leads interdisciplinary projects on water governance and border security.
Key research areas:
- Migration and border enforcement
- Transboundary water management
- Border surveillance technologies
- Labor in border economies
- Documentation and migrant precarity
His publications develop theoretical frameworks for understanding borders as sites of inclusion/exclusion and examine the racialized impacts of surveillance technologies. Recent work models water affordability under climate change scenarios.

- Distinguished Achievement Award for Critical Study of North America (2021)
- Royal Anthropological Institute Curl Essay Prize (1999)
- UTEP Outstanding Faculty Award (2009)
