Joshua William Arthurs serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto-Scarborough, with additional appointments as Associate Faculty in the Tri-Campus Graduate Department of History and Affiliated Faculty at the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies.
His research centers on the cultural, social, and intellectual history of contemporary Italy and Europe, with deep expertise in fascism and the far right, politics of memory, monuments and museums, classical tradition, race and empire, and everyday life under dictatorship. His work critically examines how historical narratives shape modern political landscapes, particularly through contested heritage and memorial practices.
Analysis of his publications reveals a consistent trajectory from historical analysis of Fascist Italy toward contemporary applications, increasingly focusing on global monument controversies, authoritarian legacies, and memory politics. Recent works demonstrate interdisciplinary engagement spanning history, political science, and cultural studies.
His scholarly recognition includes:
- Fellow of the American Academy in Rome
Arthurs co-leads the SSHRC Connections Grant initiative 'Authoritarianism: Lives, Legacies, Traumas,' examining historical and contemporary impacts of authoritarian regimes. His editorial role with the Journal of Modern Italian Studies and leadership in the Society for Italian Historical Studies reflect significant contributions to academic infrastructure.
He actively bridges historical scholarship with current socio-political debates through public-facing research on monument controversies and far-right movements.
