Joshua Walton serves as an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of History at the University of Maine, specializing in archaeology and ancient history with over 20 years of field experience at Israeli archaeological sites including Tell es-Safi, Tel ‘Eton, Ashkelon, and Tel Shimron.
He holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University (with a secondary field in Anthropology) and an M.A. in Cuneiform languages from Hebrew University, where his dissertation examined peripheral economies under the Neo-Assyrian Empire.
Dr. Walton's research focuses on Bronze and Iron Age societies in the ancient Near East, particularly economic structures within imperial systems. His current fieldwork at Tel Shimron involves directing Early Bronze Age research and co-directing Iron Age investigations, while finalizing publication of 8th/9th century BCE material from Ashkelon. At the University of Maine, he teaches courses covering Mediterranean and Near Eastern ancient history.
