Joshua Scodel is the Helen A. Regenstein Professor of English at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 1985. His research focuses on 16th- and 17th-century English literature, with special attention to intersections with continental philosophy, genre theory, and literary criticism. He has authored major works on John Donne, Ben Jonson, and the English lyric, as well as edited critical editions of Queen Elizabeth I's translations.

Scodel's research explores how early modern literature engages with political theory, intellectual history, and philosophical debates. His current project examines paradoxes in representations of liberty in early modern texts. His work has been recognized with the 2011 MLA Prize for a Distinguished Scholarly Edition.
He has published extensively on topics including Renaissance genre theory, literary criticism's evolution, and the intersection of poetry with political thought. Scodel has also served as editor of Modern Philology, a leading journal in literary history.
