Joshua Russell

Joshua Russell is an Assistant Professor of Seismology at Syracuse University's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on imaging Earth's interior using seismic waves, with emphasis on mantle dynamics, oceanic lithosphere structure, and seismic attenuation. Russell holds a Ph.D. in Seismology from Columbia University (2021).

Research interests include mid-ocean ridge processes, mantle convection, and environmental seismology applications like glacier monitoring. He leads the Cosmic Explorer observatory site evaluation project and collaborates with the Syracuse University Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy. Key grants include NSF funding for mantle dynamics studies and seismic infrastructure projects.

Notable awards include the NSF EAR Postdoctoral Fellowship (2021-2022). Russell teaches courses on plate tectonics, geophysics, and data analysis, and actively engages in science communication through outreach initiatives like Earth Institute LIVE workshops.
