Karlip's research explores intersections between traditional Judaism and secular Jewish movements, focusing on Soviet Jewish religious life, Holocaust-era intellectual responses, and Lithuanian rabbinic culture. His work challenges misconceptions about Soviet Jewish isolation and examines transnational rabbinic networks.
His publications highlight 20th-century Jewish crises, including books on Jewish nationalism, Yiddish journals, and rabbinic resistance in Bolshevik Russia. Trends in his scholarship emphasize historiography, cultural preservation, and the impact of oppressive regimes on Jewish identity.
He has taught courses such as Jews in Eastern Europe, Modern Jewish History, and Kiddush Hashem: From the Crusades to the Holocaust, with office hours at Belfer Hall, Room 526, Wilf Campus.
