Joshua Levitz, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medical College, holding dual appointments in the departments of Psychiatry and Biochemistry. He joined the faculty in 2016 as an Assistant Professor, advancing to his current rank in 2021. His research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and their roles in neurophysiology and disease, employing cutting-edge optical and chemical methodologies such as optogenetic tools and single-molecule fluorescence assays.
Levitz earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (2014) and BS from American University (2009). He leads the Levitz Lab, which investigates synaptic function, neuromodulation, and receptor signaling dynamics. Notable honors include the Rohr Family Research Scholar award (2019–2024). His work spans therapeutic areas like neuroscience, drug design, and protein engineering, with a focus on translational applications in neurological disorders.
Levitz has secured significant funding, including NIH grants for studying GPCR regulation and endocannabinoid-opioid interactions, as well as support from the Charles H. Revson Foundation. Collaborative projects include co-investigator roles in studies of Slitrk5 function and prefrontal circuitry. He also serves as a consultant for Adverum Biotechnologies, bridging academic research with industry innovation.
