Joshua Holbrook is an Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Science in the Faculty of Science and Human Services at Montreat College, where he has taught since 2017. Previously, he instructed at the Palm Beach Zoo and Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. His media appearances include reptile-focused programs on the Weather Channel, History Channel, Discovery Channel, and NatGeo, stemming from his research on Burmese Pythons and chameleons in Florida.
He earned a B.S. in Biology from Palm Beach Atlantic University and an M.S. in Environmental Science from Florida Atlantic University. His research focuses on wetland community ecology and herpetology, with active collaborations including the National Park Service, Florida/North Carolina Park Services, North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, and Palm Beach Atlantic University (studying Mangrove Saltmarsh Snakes). He mentors undergraduate researchers in monitoring amphibian/reptile diversity in North Carolina.
Prof. Holbrook integrates faith with science, emphasizing environmental stewardship and field research. His 12 recent publications (2011-2016) concentrate on herpetology, analyzing species distribution, dietary patterns, habitat use, and invasive species impacts in southeastern U.S. ecosystems. Key themes include wetland ecology, conservation biology, and reptilian behavior.
Outside academia, he served as a missionary for Equip International (teaching sustainable agriculture/medicine), is an ordained minister at Blue Ridge Church, and enjoys herping, hiking, and family activities with his wife and two daughters.
