Joshua Havelin is a Ph.D. graduate in Biomedical Science from the University of Maine (2019). He has been affiliated with the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE) and worked extensively in Dr. Tamara King’s lab, focusing on cancer-induced bone pain and osteoarthritis pain mechanisms. His research employs optogenetics, behavioral models, and transgenic mice to explore novel pharmaceutical targets.
- B.S. in Biochemistry and Medical Biology, University of New England (2007)
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Science, University of Maine (2019)
His research interests span chronic pain mechanisms, opioid receptor pharmacology, and neurobiological approaches to pain management. Key projects include investigating sensory neuron subpopulations, kappa opioid receptor agonists, and treadmill exercise interventions in osteoarthritis pain models.
Recent publications highlight advancements in understanding bone pain sensitization, nociceptor roles in breakthrough cancer pain, and cannabinoid receptor agonists’ effects on tumor-related pain. These works span neuroscience, pharmacology, and biomedical engineering disciplines.
Scientific awards include a 2017 Society for Neuroscience Travel Award. He has served as University of New England Site Coordinator (2017–2019), Maine State Science Fair judge (2015–2016), and Adjunct Assistant Lecturer at the University of New England (2016–2018).
