Joshua Garn serves as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Public Health, where he strengthens academic programs and positions the School for long-term success through administrative leadership and faculty collaboration.
His research centers on environmental exposures, particularly water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and their impact on infectious diseases and educational outcomes. Key investigations include diarrhea, gut microbiome dynamics, soil-transmitted helminths, trachoma, stunting, school absence, enrollment patterns, and cognitive development. He also examines breastfeeding and nutritional exposures related to gastrointestinal and anthropometric outcomes, with emerging focus on proteomic and genetic markers of post-infection irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for improved diagnosis and treatment.
Recent publications reveal consistent emphasis on urban water supply interventions in Mozambique, sustainability assessments of rural sanitation across multiple countries, and water-sanitation-mental health linkages. His methodological rigor spans randomized trials, observational studies, and systematic reviews, with active fieldwork in Africa and South Asia.
Garn maintains extensive international research collaborations focused on experimental and epidemiologic evaluations of WASH interventions, particularly through the PAASIM cohort study in Beira, Mozambique, and multi-country sanitation sustainability projects.
