Joshua Gafford serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering. He is affiliated with the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE) and serves on the VISE Steering Committee.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2018), an M.S. from Stanford University (2012), and a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2010).
Dr. Gafford's primary research focus is in Medical Device Design, with particular emphasis on surgical robotics and medical instrumentation. His work bridges engineering principles with clinical applications to develop innovative healthcare solutions.
He leads the Medical Engineering and Discovery Lab (MED) and collaborates closely with Robert Webster, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, through the VISE program. His research contributes to Vanderbilt's Medical Innovators Development Program (MIDP), which integrates engineering with medical education.
Dr. Gafford participates in NIH grant writing workshops and contributes to Vanderbilt's Master of Engineering degree program, particularly in the Engineering Science Institute (ESI) track focused on medical device innovation.
