Joshua Fogel is Professor of History at York University specializing in Sino-Japanese cultural exchange. With a PhD from Columbia University, his research examines transnational intellectual currents including the Esperanto movement in East Asia. He holds the Canada Research Chair position and edits the Sino-Japanese Studies journal.
His research compares how China and Japan adopted and interpreted Esperanto differently during the early 20th century, analyzing the political and cultural contexts behind its support. Current projects explore linguistic cosmopolitanism and cross-cultural understanding mechanisms between East Asian nations.
