Joshua Donovan is a Visiting Assistant Professor of global history at Boston College’s Department of History, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Middle East History from Columbia University, preceded by an M.Phil. and M.A. in Social Sciences from Columbia and the University of Chicago, respectively. His work focuses on the intersections of religion, migration, and social identity in the Ottoman, colonial, and postcolonial Middle East.
His research includes a book project on the Greek Orthodox Levant community’s history and contributions to Mashriq & Mahjar, Journal of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations, and H-Diplo. He co-edits a journal issue on Middle Eastern/European migration knowledge and co-authored a Cambridge University Press volume on U.S. Middle East policy.
Donovan’s postdoctoral fellowship at the German Historical Institute’s Pacific Office (UC Berkeley) and grants from the Max Weber Stiftung and Sakıp Sabancı Center highlight his interdisciplinary reach. His teaching includes religious and political thought seminars at Columbia as a Core Preceptor.
