Joshua D. Mabie is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, specializing in American literature and environmental studies. His research bridges literary, religious, and ecological perspectives, focusing on 19th–21st century representations of environmental change and cultural landscapes.
- Teaches courses: American Environmental Literature, American Literature Survey, American Renaissance, Scientific Writing, and Herman Melville studies.
- Current projects: Literary desolation of the Holy Land (1850–1940) and environmental history of Stoughton, Wisconsin.
His scholarship examines how writers like Melville and Twain engaged with environmental and religious themes, influencing contemporary sustainability debates. Recent articles analyze postcolonial ecocriticism, Mark Twain’s Holy Land narratives, and Eliot’s architectural symbolism.
As UW-Whitewater’s Faculty Sustainability Fellow (2013–2016), he led initiatives for campus sustainability and curriculum integration. He serves on multiple departmental and university committees, including the Sustainability Council.
