Joshua D. Bocarsly is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Houston. He previously held postdoctoral positions at the University of Cambridge (2020–2023) under the mentorship of Clare Grey and Ram Seshadri, and completed his Ph.D. in Materials at UC Santa Barbara (2015–2020) with advisors Stephen Wilson and Ram Seshadri. His research bridges inorganic materials, quantum systems, and energy conversion technologies, focusing on advanced materials for batteries, magnetocalorics, and skyrmion-based applications.
- Education
- Ph.D. in Materials, UC Santa Barbara (2020)
- A.B. in Chemistry, Princeton University (2015)
His research interests center on magnetostructural coupling, electrochemical stability, and quantum material design. Using techniques like in situ electrochemistry, NMR spectroscopy, and computational modeling, he explores phenomena such as skyrmion flop transitions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and polyanionic redox behavior. His work frequently involves collaborations with interdisciplinary teams, including contributions to the open-source datalab platform for experimental data management.
Recent publications highlight trends in LiNiO₂ phase transitions, Na-ion cathode superstructures, and LLM-driven materials discovery. His team has advanced understanding of quantum magnetic phases in lacunar spinels and magnetostructural effects in Mn-based systems.
