Dr. Sergey Shevkoplyas is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering. He holds a BS and MS from Moscow Institute of Physics & Technology (2000) and a PhD from Boston University (2005). His postdoctoral work at Harvard University (2005-2008) preceded his tenure at Tulane University as an Assistant and Associate Professor (2008-2013) before joining UH. His research focuses on developing microfluidic technologies for high-throughput cell separation in transfusion medicine and cellular therapy, emphasizing clinical translation and commercialization. Key projects include centrifugation-free blood component processing, leukocyte isolation systems, and point-of-care diagnostics for sickle cell anemia. His work is supported by NIH, NSF, CPRIT, and industry partnerships.
Research interests include microfluidic device design, blood rheology, and scalable medical technologies for global health. He leads the Blood Microfluidics Lab, which collaborates on projects funded by major health foundations. His lab develops low-cost solutions for underserved populations, such as paper-based diagnostics and portable blood processing systems.
Publications highlight advancements in microfluidic cell separation, erythrocyte storage, and regulatory T cell manufacturing. Ongoing efforts focus on improving blood product safety, reducing extracorporeal volume in therapies, and enhancing accessibility of treatments. His team's innovations aim to bridge laboratory research with clinical applications, particularly in resource-limited settings.
